Grade Point Average

A student’s Grade Point Average (GPA) is defined as an indication of a student's academic achievement at a high school or college, calculated as the total number of grade points received over a defined period of time divided by the total number of course credits awarded.

  • Where can I find my student’s GPA? If you are applying for scholarships or completing college applications, many times a Grade Point Average is requested. To ensure that an accurate GPA is obtained that reflects all high school coursework completed, the best practice is to email the Academic Coordinator at ac@gpa-nb.org. The Academic Coordinator can look up a student’s GPA in the school’s grading and information system.

    A current high school transcript can also be requested. A student’s high school transcript contains the most accurate GPA listing all high school coursework completed. Please see the “Transcripts” section on the Academic Corner landing page for more detained information on transcript requests.

  • Can I find my GPA on FACTS/RenWeb? Unfortunately, an accurate GPA is NOT available on the mobile or desktop version of our school information system. If a grade point average is seen on a report card or screen page, it will not reflect all high school coursework only. Please contact the Academic Coordinator for an accurate grade point average.

  • What is the difference between an unweighted GPA and a weighted GPA? An unweighted grade point average is typically abbreviated UGPA.  College coursework uses an UGPA. In high school, a student will have both types used. Your UGPA is based on your course grades and averaged. UGPA scales have a range from 0 to 4.0 and are very simple as below.

    Letter Grade of:

    A = 4.0 GPA

    B = 3.0 GPA

    C = 2.0 GPA

    D = 1.0 GPA

    F = 0.0 GPA

    A weighted GPA is abbreviated as GPA. A weighted GPA takes the difficulty of your classes into account along with your grades. A weighted class is academically more rigorous. Classes that have a weighted GPA are designated as Honors, Pre-AP, and AP (Advanced Placement). At Grace Prep our weighted classes go up to 5.2 GPA for our most rigorous AP English classes. Please see the grading scale in the Grace Prep Academy handbook for a detailed look.

Class Rank

Class rank is a way to compare a student's grades to those of their classmates. Students are given a number ranking based on their GPA. Class rank is one criteria colleges use to determine an applicant's academic abilities. Rankings may be expressed in numerical order (first, second, third, etc.) or as percentiles (top ten percent, top twenty-five percent, etc.). Class rank is typically determined at the end of middle school or high school, and it is used to determine academic honors such as valedictorian (first in the class) and salutatorian (second in the class).

  • Do I have a class rank? No, you do not. Grace Preparatory Academy of NB is a non-ranking school except for determining our senior class Valedictorian and Salutatorian. After March of each school year, only the graduating class will have the first and second student in the senior class ranked.

  • Why does Grace Prep not offer a class rank? Due to our small class sizes and the individualized attention our students receive, our students get really great grades! This means that our student’s grade point averages are all very high and it would be grossly unfair to classify a student with a high GPA into a low class rank. Our student’s grades do not fall into a standard grading distribution on a bell curve.

  • But my college application is insisting that I submit a class rank?!? In the event a class rank is necessary to complete an application to college, our school can offer the following:

    GPA-NB considers a cumulative unweighted grade point average (UGPA) of 3.9 to qualify a student for graduation in the “Top 10%” of their graduating class. Additionally, we consider a cumulative unweighted grade point average (UGPA) of 3.6 to qualify a student for graduation in the “Top 25%” of their graduating class.
